New Vinyl Floor Odor

Some plastic and vinyl building products including windows doors and some sidings and trim outgas a plastic like odor especially when new and in some cases even when not new.

The adhesive used to hold the linoleum in place may also give off a strong chemical odor. The use of volatile organic compounds in the manufacturing process of vinyl can actually fill your home with dangerous fumes and odors. New linoleum flooring may emit a slight odor similar to linseed oil for several months after installation. But most of these odors dissipate pretty quickly over just a few weeks and faster if the item such as your new screen door are exposed to warmth of sunlight.

If you notice that distinct plastic y smell of vinyl in your new home it may be coming from your vinyl blinds. Reduce the odor by allowing the vinyl to breathe outdoors or in a well ventilated area for several hours or even several days if possible. Vinyl tile flooring is constructed of new or recycled polyvinyl chloride or pvc that is known to be one of the most environmentally hazardous consumer materials that are produced for flooring. It has essentially been rebranded as luxury vinyl flooring and touts its new advancements and realistic look while maintaining its low price. Vinyl flooring especially when new can emit a plastic smell or odor. The blinds may have all been recently replaced and the new vinyl may be causing the off putting scent especially when the vinyl is warmed by the sun. Vinyl items such as shower curtains often have a strong characteristic odor for days or even weeks after you take them out of their original packaging.

Some flooring mastics are also odor sources. And consider keeping new engineered wood or laminate flooring furniture made with pressed wood and other sources of formaldehyde outside living spaces at least until you cannot smell chemicals.
